Charu
Shivakumar brings to Westgate Child
Center her lifelong love for
children and strong commitment to Early Childhood Education. Ms. Shivakumar
began her career in Early Childhood Education in 1968. She holds a graduate
degree and a post graduate diploma in early childhood education from the
University of Delhi, India, and has continued to attend classes on early
childhood education in order to keep up to date in the field of education.
"Ms. Charu" (as she is known by children, parents and staff)
joined Westgate Child
Center in 1978 as a head teacher
and was appointed Director in 1988. She has overseen more than 28 years of
remarkable growth in the Center's service to community. Ms. Charu has, with her dedication and perseverance,
been a key element in the success and development of the Center. From its
beginnings as a small daycare in the basement of an office building, Ms. Charu
has consistently nurtured the quality of the Center, upgrading the Center's
program according to the guidelines of the National Association for the
Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Today the staff is well qualified with years of experience (average tenure
is 12 years), and with a record of loyalty and continuity that translates to
concrete benefit for the Center's children. Enjoying a low child teacher ratio
of 5 to 1, the children find themselves in stimulating classrooms with
developmentally relevant books, learning toys, computers and music as well as a
safe and well equipped playground.
A mother of 3 children, and grandmother of 5, Ms.Charu and her husband
recently celebrated their 45th anniversary.
